Position Description
This is a graduate student teaching assistant (TA) opportunity to work with seven leadership education faculty in the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communications. TA’s will be assigned to work with two to three courses a semester, including ALED 202, ALED 301, *ALED 340, ALED 424, *ALED 440 and ALED 481. These are the foundational courses of the agricultural leadership and development undergraduate degree.
Expectations
- Demonstrated interest in leadership and leadership education;
- Demonstrated interest in leadership research, discovery and inquiry;
- Office hours and availability to undergraduate students;
- 20 hours of scheduled time with assigned courses and/or research per week;
- A combination of classroom teaching, grading, weekly meetings, and lesson development; and
- Attendance at appropriate meetings.
Qualifications
- bachelor’s or master’s degree in agricultural leadership, agricultural education, or related field
- Organized and prepared
- Proactive in course planning
- Communication skills (oral and written)
- Professionalism as an educator
- Facilitation experience (small groups)
- Basic word processing and spread sheet development (for grading purposes)
- Ability to conduct individual student assessment; including grading of writing and performance feedback
*In the case that teaching assistant assignment is to a writing intensive course, background in writing, English, technical grammar and punctuation is strongly emphasized.
Appointment and Start Date
Position is a half-time appointment (20 hours), renewable each semester assuming satisfactory progress and available funding. Expected start date is January, June or August.
Salary and Benefits
Salary is commensurate with experience with starting salaries of $1,850/month for master’s and doctoral students. In accordance with University policy, tuition for doctoral applicants may be waived. Applications
Applicants must submit an assistantship application and include a letter of interest for the assistantship
specifically detailing the qualifications listed above. To qualify for an assistantship, students must first apply for admission to the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communications. Because these items must be submitted with the admission application, if already on file, there is no need to submit duplicates.
Admission materials and assistantship application with letter of interest must be received by the Department no later than September 1 (fall) or November 1 (spring). Decisions will be made in November and April.
