B.S. Agricultural Communications and Journalism

The B.S. in agricultural communications and journalism prepares students for a career in communications, marketing, public relations and more. Students gain an understanding of media and science communication theory and industry best-practices to apply what they learn outside of the classroom. Graduates gain skills in the areas of social media, scientific writing, journalism, magazine production, photography, broadcast journalism, public relations, advertising and multimedia content creation.

Students gain hands-on experience producing the AgriLeader, one of only two completely student-produced publications on the Texas A&M University campus.

Admissions

Our agricultural communicators are truth-seekers, committed to sharing science in an unbiased and objective manner. Our experts have proven that our messages effect consumers who ultimately make lifestyle decisions that best align with their personal household values. We are skillful in our use of new media and appreciate the special benefits of traditional media that still delivers the world news to many rural communities in this country and in other countries. We help students build upon traits like curiosity, integrity and empathy to create content that better resonates with their audience. Students also gain foundations to better dissect and contextualize complex scientific information to better translate that science to the public through the most relevant and effective mediums and platforms. We teach students how to report unbiased news about science to an ever increasingly science-sceptic world and work tirelessly to test consumer messages and the sources of those messages.

We inspire innovators, creators and entrepreneurs

Heather Janak ’18 graduated with a degree in agricultural communications and journalism and is now a full-time content creator. She’s using the knowledge and skills she learned to bring her brand to life with intentional music, artful cinematography and easy-to-follow recipes.

“I loved that this program was so hands-on and taught practice, as well as theory. I do all of my own graphic design, photography, videography, editing, writing and website management now. The foundation for each of these skills came from my agricultural communications and journalism degree.”
