Scholarships
UNDERGRADUATE
Nominations are provided by the department faculty and selections are made in the
Spring of each year.
• Herman D. Brown Scholarship: the recipient is an ADEV or AGSC student who is dedicated
to agricultural education in the broadest sense and has a sincere appreciation for
the department.
• Charlie and Jean Smith Scholarship: the recipient is an ADEV student who is a
leader in the department and will make an impact as a leader of society.
• Christopher Breen Scholarship: the recipient is an ADEV student who embodies the
Aggie Spirit and ahs a sincere appreciation for the goals of Agricultural Development.
• J. Lawson Sowell Memorial Scholarship: the recipient is an AGSC student who demonstrates
potential as a good teacher and advisor, engaged in school & community development,
and committed to professional leadership.
• Henry Ross Scholastic Achievement Award: the recipient will be the student who
has the highest grade point average in the Agricultural Education Department.
GRADUATE
• Distinguished Graduate Student Research Awards The Association of Former Students
has for many years recognized the important role of graduate students in the university
community. The Association demonstrates its support in several ways and has established
annual awards for distinguished research by graduate students. These awards consist
of publicly-presented framed certificates and cash gifts to the recipients. The
department may nominate one master's student and one doctoral student each year.
A review committee of faculty scholars evaluate nominations.
• Distinguished Graduate Student Assistant-Teaching The Association of Former Students
of Texas A&M University provides awards in recognition of distinguished teaching
by Graduate Assistants-Teaching, thus emphasizing the important contribution made
by teaching assistants to the academic programs of this University. A Selection
Committee, composed of members of the Graduate Faculty, reviews nominations for
these awards. The Department may submit two eligible nominees each year. Nominees
may be either master's or doctoral students.
• Graduate Student Mini-Grant Program Doctoral students who need monetary support
for their research or research-related travel expenses can apply for funds through
the Graduate Student Mini-Grant Program. Candidates must have a dissertation on
file, be enrolled or a minimum of nine semester hours during a regular semester,
and must not be prior recipients of the grants.
• McDonald's Graduate Assistant Teaching Award The owner of the local McDonald's
franchises provides cash awards ($500.00 each) for outstanding graduate teaching
assistants across the University. The Department may submit one nomination each
year. Graduate Assistants in the Department have been quite successful in receiving
one of these awards.
• Graduate Fellowships Highly competitive fellowships are available to graduate
students with outstanding records. Ordinarily, graduate students holding fellowships
are not required to perform any services. Graduate students holding fellowships
administered through the Office of Graduate Studies must register for a minimum
of 9 semester credit hours during a fall or spring semester, 6 semester hours during
a 10-week summer semester, or 3 semester credit hours during a 5-week summer term.
Unless specifically excluded by the conditions of the fellowship award, students
holding fellowships administered through the Office of Graduate Studies may concurrently
hold assistantships requiring service up to 20 hours per week. Graduate students
concurrently holding a fellowship with a one-quarter time assistantship normally
have the same requirements as students holding one-half time assistantships. Colleges
and departments may impose additional semester credit-hour requirements for students
holding assistantships or fellowships that exceed the minimal stated above. Students
in post-baccalaureate non-degree status are not eligible for graduate assistantships
or fellowships.
• Graduate Assistantships

from the Department Office. Information concerning University Academic Scholarships,
Awards and Financial Assistance Programs may be secured from the Director of Student
Financial Aid.
