Thank you for your interest in student teaching. In order to be eligible for student teaching, all teacher education coursework MUST be complete and no more 10 hours of other coursework can be remaining. You must also meet specific grade requirements in several courses as well as have a 2.5 overall GPA PRIOR TO STUDENT TEACHING. Refer to the Student Teaching Audit for additional information on necessary coursework. Please refer to the Placement Process Flowchart for steps involved in the student teacher placement process.
Our primary goal in placing student teachers is to ensure the BEST experience possible for you. We consider many factors to place you. These factors include courses you would like to teach, size and type of school you would like, size and type of school you come from, SAE and FFA involvement and activities you would like to become more exposed to, and where you have friends and family you could live with. We work with specific teachers across the state--teachers we select are very familar with the faculty and program at Texas A&M University. Most student teaching centers are within two hours of campus, but we do work with student teaching centers all over the state in order to give our students the best experience possible.
Once you have completed all coursework and are ready to student teach, complete steps 1 & 2.
Refer to the handouts below for specific due dates and timelines for your semester of student teaching:
Fall Student Teaching (paperwork and interviews completed before Spring Break)
Spring Student Teaching (paperwork and interviews completed BEFORE the fall semester begins preceding the spring semester student teaching begins)
STEP #1: Submit materials. Post to your digital portfolio website under a new link called "student teaching materials." If you have not taken AGSC 384 yet (this is where you start creating your digital porfolio), please view the handout on creating your googlesites page.
--Resume--submit your best resume that includes the following headings: Education, Professional Experience, Honors and Activities (on digital portfolio);
--Autobiography--be sure to follow the guidelines suggested in terms of what to share, length, etc. Remember that faculty and cooperating teachers will be reading this information and making decisions on appropriate placement for you. (on digital portfolio)
Email to Jamie Norgaard (JNorgaard@tamu.edu):
--Pre Interview Application/Questionnaire (email as an attachment)
--Googlesites web address with your resume and autobiography uploaded.
You will also need to fill out a Criminal Records Check Consent Form (from Jamie Norgaard).
STEP # 2: Once all materials are submitted and your digital porfolio is updated, you should call to schedule two interviews with the AGSC faculty members (Harlin, Murphy, Larke, Briers, and Rayfield). AFTER you have emailed your paperwork, call Jamie at 979-845-5622
to schedule your interviews. Interviews are informal and last about 30 minutes.
The documents below contain information discussed at the Pre-Student Teaching Meeting (date can be found in the handouts above).
If you have questions about this process or the necessary paperwork, please contact Dr. Harlin at j-harlin@tamu.edu
