Emphasis Areas

The ALED Emphasis Area is made up of 12 hours of customized coursework that is related to your career goals. The 12 hours must come from the same option category and at least 6 of the 12 hours must be upper level (300-400). You must discuss your Emphasis Area with your Academic Advisor.

Often times, a minor fits the degree plan with minimal additional hours if it correlates to the Emphasis Area. Completion of a 12-hour Emphasis Area does not result in an official minor. However, minors are encouraged. Minors are 15-18 hours and require the official approval of the minor-granting department. Once you have the approval, you must show this proof to your Advisor. The only exception to this is Business Administration. Visit with your Undergraduate Advisor to have any minor officially added to your degree plan.  

If you elect to not complete a minor, you must visit with your ALED Undergraduate Advisor to discuss the required coursework for your desired Emphasis Area. A selection of common Emphasis Areas are below, although you are not limited to those choices. However, if you select one of the areas below, you must select 12 credit hours from the courses listed.    

*Military Science courses, SOMS courses and other courses related to the Corps of Cadets may not be used in your emphasis area unless you are a military contract cadet who will be commissioning into the service upon graduation.
