UNDERGRADUATE

Nominations are provided by the department faculty and selections are made in the Spring of each year.

  • Christopher D. Breen Scholarship: the recipient is an ALED student who embodies the Aggie Spirit and has a sincere appreciation for the goals of Agricultural Development.
  • Herman D. Brown Scholarship: the recipient is an ALED or AGSC student who is dedicated to agricultural education in the broadest sense and has a sincere appreciation for the department.
  • Thomas L. Curl for Excellence Scholarship: the recipient is an AGCJ student demonstrating excellence in agricultural communications and journalism.
  • Marcus E. Hill '71 Endowed Scholarship: the recipient is an AGSC student who is a leader in student teaching maintaining a 2.5 GPA or higher.
  • Susie Kendall Endowed Scholarship: the recipient is a full-time ALED student with a physical or learning disbility.
  • Whitley DeKoch Lowry Scholarship: the recipient must maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher, be dedicated to agricultural education, and either has been or is actice in 4-H or FFA.
  • Carole and Horace McQueen '60 Endowed Scholarship: the recipient is a full-time AGCJ student dedicated to agricultural communications and journalism.
  • Henry Ross Scholastic Achievement Award: the recipient is a student who has the highest grade point average in the Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Development Department. 
  • Charlie and Jean Smith Scholarship: the recipient is an ALED Sophomore, Junior or Senior who is a leader in the department and will make an impact as a leader of society.
  • J. Lawson Sowell Memorial Scholarship: the recipient is an AGSC student who demonstrates potential as a good teacher and adviser, engaged in school & community development, and committed to professional leadership.
  • Chris Townsend Endowed Leadership Scholarship: the recipient is an ALED or USAL student who demonstrates outstanding leadership and will make an impact in society.
  • Ralph, Linda, and Louise Ward Endowed Scholarship: recipient is an ALED transfer student maintaining a 3.00 GPA.
  • G. Rollie White FFA Scholarship: the recipient is an AGSC student engaged in agricultural education.

GRADUATE (Awards, Fellowships, Scholarships)

Students must be enrolled full-time and remain in good academic standing to be eligible for any award, assistantship, fellowship, or scholarship. Students in post-baccalaureate non-degree status (G6) are not eligible for graduate assistantships or fellowships.

Texas A&M University Awards

  • Distinguished Graduate Student Research Award: The Association of Former Students has for many years recognized the important role of graduate students in the university community. The Association demonstrates its support in several ways and has established annual awards for distinguished research by graduate students. These awards consist of publicly presented framed certificates and cash gifts to the recipients. The department may nominate one master's student and one doctoral student each year. A review committee of faculty scholars evaluate nominations.
  • Distinguished Graduate Student Assistant Teaching Award: The Association of Former Students provides awards in recognition of distinguished teaching by Graduate Assistants, thus emphasizing the important contribution made by teaching assistants to the academic programs. A Selection Committee, composed of members of the Graduate Faculty, reviews nominations for these awards. The Department may submit two eligible nominees each year. Nominees may be either master's or doctoral students.
  • Graduate Student Mini-Grant Program: Doctoral students who need monetary support for their research or research-related travel expenses can apply for funds through the Graduate Student Mini-Grant Program offered by the Office of Graduate Studies. Candidates must have a dissertation on file, be enrolled for a minimum of 9 semester hours during a regular semester, and must not be prior recipients of the grant.
  • George W. Kunze Prize:  In honor of Dr. George Kunze, the long-time Dean of Gradaute College at Texas A&M University, an endowment was established several years ago. This award recognizes a doctoral student who has been admitted to candidacy by September 1 of the previous year before the deadline of April to receive a one-time stipend of $1000.00.
  • Graduate Diversity Fellowship:  Supported by the Office of Graduate Studies, established to attract individuals who have proven record of success in a diverse environment. Provides funding to highly competitive master's or doctoral students first fall semester start nominated by department faculty.
  • Graduate Merit Fellowship/The Association of Former Students Fellowship:  Supported by the Office of Graduate Studies to attract highly-qualified individuals. Provides funding for master's or doctoral students first fall semester start nominated by department faculty.
  • Pathways to the Doctorate Fellowship: (First semester, fall start only fellowship.) Through the Pathways to the Doctorate program, several institutions in the Texas A&M University System are making assistantships or scholarships available to students from within the Texas A&M University System wishing to pursue graduate study at Texas A&M University in College Station. To qualify, students must be from a different institution within the Texas A&M University System. Nominated by department faculty.

Outside Association Awards

  •  Alan A. Kahler Outstanding Dissertation Award - The American Association for Agricultural Education established this award with funds made possible by Dr. Alan A. Kahler to recognize the doctoral student who has completed the most outstanding dissertation during the previous calendar year prior to the March 1 deadline. One nominee may be submitted each year. Nominations are reviewed by a committee of faculty scholars.
  • The American Educational Research Association: Workplace Learning Dissertation of the Year Award - Special Interest Group (SIG) researchers review nominations of doctoral dissertations dedicating and applying research relating to adult learning processes and structures within the context of work. Nominations are submitted each year and reviewed by SIG Awards Committee.
  • McDonald's Graduate Assistant Teaching Award: The owner of the local McDonald's franchises provides cash awards ($500 each) for outstanding graduate teaching assistants across the University. The Department may submit one nomination each year. Graduate Assistants in the Department have been quite successful in receiving one of these awards.

Departmental

  • R.B. Dooley '39 Endowed Scholarship: Awarded to a one or more full-time masters or doctoral students in good academic standing pursuing a graduate degree in ALEC.
  • Frank Sheppard Scholarship: Awarded to one or more full-time masters or doctoral students in good standing with research interests related to Community Resources and Economic Development Programs of Texas Cooperative Extension.
  • G. Rollie White FFA Scholarship: Highly competitive scholarship in which the recipient is an ALEC graduate student engaged in agricultural leadership, education, and communications.  
  • Graduate Assistantships: The assistantships are awarded through the department. Assistantships are available on a competitive basis to qualified individuals. It is assumed that you have applied for admission to the department if you are applying for an assistantship. Specific assignments are made based upon the needs of the Department and the experience of the students. A letter of interest to the contact listed on the position announcement specifically detailing your qualifications should accompany the application. You may apply for more than one position, but qualifications should closely match the position description. The deadline to apply for teaching assistantship positions for Spring semester is October 1 and for Summer and Fall is February 1. To apply, refer to the Assistantships web page.
